Photoshoot at Marimurtra Botanical Garden: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

A photoshoot at Marimurtra Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful experiences you can have near Barcelona. Whether you’re planning a surprise proposal, an engagement session, a lifestyle photoshoot, or an editorial shoot, this iconic location offers breathtaking Mediterranean views, dramatic cliffs, and lush botanical gardens.

It’s no surprise that Marimurtra has become one of the most popular photoshoot locations for both travelers and locals. After photographing more than 100 sessions here, I’ve learned exactly how to make the most of this incredible place-and I’m sharing all the tips you should know before booking your session.

What is the best time for a photoshoot at Marimurtra Botanical Garden?

FOR SURPRISE PROPOSALS

If you’re planning a surprise proposal at Marimurtra Botanical Garden, I highly recommend visiting as early as possible. The best time is right when the gardens open, when you’ll have the highest chance of enjoying a quiet, intimate moment away from the crowds.

Opening hours:

May–September: 9:00 AM
March–May: 9:30 AM
September–October: 9:30 AM
October–March: 10:00 AM

As a photographer who has captured many proposals here, I always arrive a little earlier. Since the proposal is usually a surprise, I avoid meeting the couple at the entrance and instead wait inside the gardens, where I can stay discreet until the perfect moment.

The morning light is soft and beautiful, making it ideal for romantic photographs. Even during the busy season, it’s surprisingly peaceful right after opening, and in my experience, I’ve rarely had to share the most iconic viewpoints with other visitors.

Afternoon photoshoots

If you’re planning an engagement, lifestyle, editorial, or wedding photoshoot, the afternoon is also a great option.

There will usually be more visitors, and the light can be a little more challenging than in the morning. However, an experienced photographer knows how to work with both the light and the surroundings to create beautiful, timeless images.

One thing to keep in mind is that the gardens close relatively early around **4:00–5:00 PM**, depending on the season, so sunset photos aren’t possible here. That said, the afternoon light is still gorgeous, and if your session happens on a cloudy day, you’ll get especially soft, flattering light that’s perfect for photography.

Do you need a permit for a professional photoshoot?

Yes. Professional photography at Marimurtra Botanical Garden requires advance booking.

Currently, there are two options:

Standard photography permit: €145 includes entrance tickets
Exclusive use of the gardens: €2,000, giving you complete privacy and exclusive access during your reserved time.

If privacy is important-for example, for a proposal or an editorial production-the exclusive option can be worth considering. Otherwise, the standard permit is perfect for most couple and engagement sessions.
